But anti-seize is abrasive, and causes a little bit of wear on the threads when tightened down. Some mechanics always do, in order to avoid the plug seizing in place. One controversial topic is whether to use anti-seize on the spark plug threads. A spark plug too tight can damage the threads, while a spark plug too loose can blow out, taking the threads with it. The two practices that help avoid that are always starting the threads by hand, and torquing the spark plug to the correct specification. Sometimes thread can be cleaned up or repaired in place, other times the cylinder head may need to be removed for repair. The cost of replacing spark plugs depends largely on how many spark plugs there are. The gap on a new plug is checked and then it’s screwed into place. The spark plug wire or coil is removed from the plug, then it is unscrewed from it’s position on the engine. The threads in the cylinder head can strip, which is pretty much a worst-case scenario. Replacing a spark plug is usually pretty simple.

If a plug is dropped the ceramic insulation can crack, and then the voltage spike can follow the crack instead of bridging the gap in the combustion chamber. The body of each spark plug has a metal part carrying the threads and the hex that the it is screwed in by, and then a ceramic insulation around it’s positive connection to the coil. This is the reason to check the gap on each plug before installation. Re-install the intake system, and you are ready to test fire. Install the new cap and put the spark plug wires back in, following the firing order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. Double check all marks before continuing. If the gap isn’t correct then the spark won’t be adequate, or won’t happen at all, causing a misfire. Loosely install the clamp, and rotate the entire distributor so that the marks at the base line up. Probably the most common problem that comes with spark plug replacement is shipping damage or a dropped plug that causes the gap to close up. For the most part there isn’t a cost savings to one way over the other, and the more important thing is just to stick to a regular maintenance schedule regardless of who does the work. At a dealership there is often a bundled-cost service, while other service facilities will separate out the costs. It’s also very common for spark plugs to be done at a service interval where other things need done as well, such as intake system cleaning, transmission services and so forth. Very few vehicles use a cap and rotor these days though. If you do not, the bike will break down a short time after it has started, if you can manage to get it to start at all.If the vehicle uses a cap and rotor those are usually replaced on the same schedule as the spark plugs, and then they’re all replaced together as a “tune-up”, usually with a bundled price. It is vitally important to put the wires back in the right sequence on engines with multiple cylinders. Gently reattach each wire into the specific spark plug with your fingertips. However, you should never over tighten the spark plugs. Use your spark plug wrench or socket to give the spark plug a final strong turn. Screw it into place with your fingers each time. Spray a little penetrating oil over the threads to stop any chance of friction developing when you screw on the new spark plugs. This will also help with the ignition of the engine. It is always a good idea to check the cylinder heads before you install new spark plugs anyway. Check for any signs of damage to the plugs once you have removed them as this could indicate that debris may have fallen into the cylinder. It should now be easy to spin them out of position using your fingers. Turn the spark plugs until they are loose. Do not be afraid to use extensive pressure because the spark plugs have linings which prevent surface cracks to the case. Use a ratchet and a spark plug socket to turn the spark plugs in an anti-clockwise direction. This will also make replacement of the spark plugs a cleaner experience. A good tip is to use a compressor to blow air over the spark plugs. This may sound strange but it will stop any dirt or debris from falling into the cylinders of the engine when you remove the plugs from their position. Use a little cleaning agent and a wet cloth to rub the spark plugs and clean them before you remove them.
